Birmingham, Alabama Dr. Gary Monheit is a native of Ossining, New York, though he grew up in Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1966, and from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1970. His medical internship was at the University of Southern California, and then he completed a dermatology residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1977, where he was chief resident. He next completed a fellowship in Moh’s micrographic surgery under Dr. Frederick Mohs at the University of Wisconsin in 1978, along with a training program in dermatologic surgery.
Dr. Monheit is presently an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is the founder of Dermatology Associates, establishing the private practice in 1978. He established the first Moh’s surgical practice for skin cancer in Alabama and has established a year-long fellowship training program in skin cancer, 1986-present. Dr. Monheit has lectured internationally on his areas of expertise including Moh’s micrographic surgery, hair transplantation, chemical peeling, dermabrasion, soft tissue augmentation, laser surgery, and cosmetic dermatologic surgery.
Dr. Monheit has published over 50 articles in medical literature and chapters in books. From 1994 until 2007, Dr. Monheit has been elected to “Best Doctors in America” each year. He is currently conducting clinical research with dermal fillers, soft tissue augmentation and botulinum toxin for cosmetic usage and was a principle investigator for FDA trials of new products. His current practice interests are cosmetic dermatologic surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery and skin cancer. He is board certified in Dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology and in Cosmetic Surgery by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgeons. He is a full fellow in the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgery, The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. He is past President of AACS (2002) and ASDS (2006).
