Zitelli graduate Cum Laude from University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine in 1976, and completed his Residency training, also at University of Pittsburgh, in 1979. Dr. Zitelli is a skin cancer specialist whose practice is limited to skin cancer surgery, primarily Mohs micrographic surgery. After his Fellowship training in Mohs surgery with Dr. Frederic Mohs, he joined a newly established Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. He established the first Mohs surgery unit in Pittsburgh and began his professional career as Assistant Professor of Dermatology. He taught residents and medical students, both Dermatology and surgery, and began a Fellowship training program in Mohs surgery in 1984. By contributing to this specialty through research, education and service, he was promoted to Associate Professor and eventually served as Interim Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh that he helped to establish.
In 1987, Dr. Zitelli established his own private practice for the treatment of skin cancer. Since then he has continued to lecture locally, nationally and internationally as well as contribute to the fund of knowledge of the specialty through clinical research. He continues to direct a sought after surgical training program that graduates Dermatologists with special training in Mohs surgery and cutaneous oncology. Dr. Zitelli’s special interests include melanoma and melanoma surgery, reconstructive surgery, wound healing and cutaneous oncology. He has authored 40 original articles, 29 reviews, proceedings and chapters, as well as 33 abstracts. He has served as an Officer or Director in the Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology as well as the American Academy of Dermatology.
