Dr. Kern is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Epsilon Delta Honorary Premedical Society, American Medical Association, San Diego County Medical Society, American Society for Mohs Surgery, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.

In October of 1989, Dr. Kern presented Atypical Secondary Syphilis as a Presenting Sign of HIV Positivity, at the Pacific Dermatologic Association Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. In October of 1998, Dr. Kern presented Dilantin Hypersensitivity Syndrome, at the Pacific Dermatologic Association Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
